new garden area

Beginning last fall we began a project of expanding our garden area into a previously unused area on our property. This involved tearing down our old vine covered fence and putting up a new one. In January we began getting things ready for planting this spring. I got the tub in the 1st photo for $10 at an estate sale and the cart I got from my friends at Old Soul Studios. I like how it looks, but it actually is practical. I may need to move it to locate it in the sunniest area. With the cart I can move the tub even with the soil in it. Now I have good soil in the planters and the drip system extended to this area. Now I just need spring.

I found a picture in a garden magazine of a planter something like this one. We didn't copy it exactly, but we used the picture as inspiration. I have also seen similar picture on Pinterest. I had salvaged some tin siding from my sister-in-law's place. It has some nice age. The bottom had some extreme rust so I cut that off.

I've had 2 of these metal bins forever and have used them in a variety of ways. So now one is in this new area to provide a handy place to stick stuff when I'm working out there.

Things look blah with no plants, so please try to visualize how nice it will look with veggies and flowers come summer.

Ready for Christmas

I think it was on Pinterest that I saw a picture of a bed spring Christmas tree that someone had made and knew I would have to try this too. So, even though Christmas is a long ways off, I decided I'd better do it now while I was inspired. It took awhile to figure out how to put the springs together. I used two different style of spring. Now it's ready for ornaments next December.

This seems like an unusual re-purposing, but it worked. This old sieve has found it's way into our house and onto a lamp to serve as a lamp shade. The sieve had been residing outside in the garden for a number of years. It had succulents planted in it for part of that time. Yesterday I was out in the garden wandering around looking for something else and my eyes settled on the sieve and saw a lampshade. There's just no explanation for what happens sometimes. So I took it in the house, gave it a good wash and looked for a lamp it might fit. And here it sits.

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas.

This is one more welded garden flower I did. I didn't post it before Christmas because it was part of my daughter's Christmas presents and I didn't want to spoil the surprise since she checks out my blog. She likes filigree and the center grate is as close as I could come in steel. I'm looking forward to another welding class in February.

Just wanted to do a quick post on some recent projects and say 'Hi' and Happy Holidays!!

I've been back in welding class for the last 5 weeks and have been busy welding junk pieces together.

I saw this in a recent magazine and thought I might be able to make it.

2 pieces of rod from Home Depot, my welding teacher helped me forge the curves and then I welded the 2 pieces together. Fun and quick!

My absence

To anyone who may have wondered about my absence, I want to explain. We were on vacation to the east coast which was a wonderful adventure and totally new to both my husband and me. I also used this time to reflect on what I wanted to do next with my blog. My interests and activities have changed since I began my blog 2 1/2 years ago. It has become more difficult to put the inspiration in the blog that I used to feel. So I am going to take a break from my blog. I'm not sure how things will evolve, but I will continue to check in on those of you I've considered blog friends. And, I'm sure I will still blog to search out inspiration for my own creative interests. I've enjoyed getting to know so many different bloggers and have been awed by the vast creativity out there. I wish everyone the very best. And I will be searching for what will be next.

I was out looking for the new issue of Flea Market Style as soon as I thought it was possibly on the shelves. I couldn't believe my luck, but I found it at the 1st place I looked - CVS. I always go through my magazines fairly quickly the 1st time and fold page corners where I know I want to come back and really explore. I'm just always so excited to see what is there, I can't go slowly at first. When I finished my 1st time through the fall FMS, I had 18 corners turned. WOW!!

So this lazy susan, using a grinding stone was one of the FMS projects that really caught my eye. I had a grinding stone sitting in the garden and scrape wood, so buying the turntable mechanism was the only purchase which was $6.

There are very good directions and a list of what you need to do the project in the magazine on page 135. The only part that was a bit challenging was attaching the wood block to the base. You had to center it then turn it upside down to drill and attach with a screw. So I finally tacked a few tiny nails around the block to hold it in place and this worked. They were easy to pull out after because I didn't hammer them in very far.

My sweet husband did the cutting and did a great job of making the center wood block fit the irregular opening in the center. He finally also attached the turntable to the top and bottom pieces of wood for me. I have a tendency to strip screws and then he has to get them out, so he's decided it is easier if he does them. I did the measuring and attached the block. It took an afternoon which included a trip I made to get tiny screws that were needed for the turntable. You'd think when we have hundreds and hundreds of screws, there'd be something that worked - but no.

So here is the finished project sitting on the table. I love the rough texture of the stone and the lazy susan mechanism works great. I put some self stick pads on the bottom of the base to protect the table. It is a very heavy piece.

There are many other interesting things in this magazine.

OMG - I just realized when I read TG's comment that all that I had written on this post didn't come through. I have had some weird things happenings with the blog again. I got 267 spam hits one day, but they were blocked by content. Thank goodness.

Anyway - although this is rather late - let me explain these pictures. We had been to a gallery recently and seen some beautiful rustic frames made from old material. My husband looked them over and said he thought he could make this for us if I would get the material and draw up how I wanted it to look. So that is what happened. I went to my fav local junk store and - can you believe - he had just what I was imagining including the mirror. It cost $11 for all. The photo doesn't show it well, but the brown wood is inset and actually goes out to the edge under the turquoise wood.

We are very happy with how it came out.

Again, I apologize for not even checking my blog post. I had it all written and assumed it would post as usual.

2 projects done . . .

I thought I could do both of these projects the same, but that didn't turn out to be the case.

The top photo is the one that is done and was pretty simple. I got the frame probably 1 1/2 years ago for $2. It had a pan in it, but kind of grossed me out because it had been used in a butcher shop. So I sold the pan and kept the frame which I really liked. It is sturdy and I like the wheels. The pan has a rolled edge and a guy gave it to me at his yard sale. I've had it a year or so but had stashed it and just re-discovered it and suddenly thought - it was the top for the frame. They work together. So I just got some bolts and wing nuts. My husband drilled the holes - that way they end up straight. We slipped the bolts in, twisted the wing nuts on and it was ready to go. It is pretty heavy, but rolls nicely. I haven't decided where to use it yet though.

The second project I thought would work the same way. The frame is an old postal basket on rollers. We found it years ago for $12 at a great yard sale. I think I paid $8 for the pan. I use this as a work surface - hanging laundry or a place to put my tools when I'm working on something. I sealed the pan with a clear varnish spray. When it came to drilling through the frame to put the bolts in, I discovered it is solid and the drill wasn't going through. So I used another approach to fasten the two pieces together. I used little metal straps and bolted them to the top pan. I am SO happy with how both pieces came out.

It has been fun re-connecting with good old junk after a rather long dry spell. Can't wait to show you the project my husband and I worked on together when it is finished. It was fun.

I don't remember how many years ago I tore this out of a magazine. It was either Country Living or Country Home and it was probably 15-20 years ago. I have always kept it and ran across it the other day. I wondered it this was where my idea began for wanting bricks in our garden. I realized when I looked at it at this time, that my daughters house that they bought a year ago has this exact set up on the back of their house. I gave her the picture for inspiration. I thought that was a pretty interesting example of how ideas come together over time. There was a closed patio room in this shape when they bought, but it wasn't in good shape so they opened it up. The bones are all there for something like this to be possible.

Maybe some of you who are newer to my blog haven't seen the metal cubie I have in my work room. I've had it a couple of years and it is VERY handy for storing small items that can easily get lost in drawers. It really has been nice to know when I'm looking for some hardware piece, I know I can find it quickly. The last time I posted about the cubie was a year ago and I have been amazed at how it has continued to be of weekly interest to people. So I tried to take some close-ups of some of the current things it holds. I hope you enjoy seeing it or re-seeing it as the case may be.

Going back to the sale we went to a week and half ago, these are they other items that we got. The larger tub in now in the garden and full of soil and compost, ready for spring planting. I haven't yet decided how to use the smaller tub. It is water tight and could be used as a small water garden container, but I've not tried that before and haven't begun to learn about what that entails. The other pieces will end up being used in garden as well.

Beautiful Day At The Snow

We drove less than an hour today to the Sierra Mountains to play in the snow with our dog. It was a beautiful, sunny day. It wasn't that the temp was so warm, but with the sun and playing we got warm. Kira had a wonderful dog day leaping for snow balls, dancing for joy and digging holes with me in the snow. There was one semi-shady area where I took the 3rd and 4th pictures. The snow reminded me of how the moss looks on the trees at home. But these were tiny icy white feathers instead of soft, green feathers. It was great to be outdoors. We had the best burger at Moody's in Truckee. Eating red meat isn't something we do very often, but sometimes you just must have a really good burger. This is a small restaurant that Paul McCartney shows up in on a casual basis every year or so. He apparently enjoys the area and the restaurant and he will play a few songs with who ever else is playing there from what I've heard. This is never advertised, it is just Paul doing his life. So you can never plan on going to see him there. As a huge Paul fan, my husband would be blown away if Paul walked in when we were there. We were fortunate to see him in concert once. Now I have a tired dog sleeping soundly with her head right next to me. Her tail wags occasionally. Hopefully, she is having happy dreams of a fun day in the snow.

Another Bed Spring Wreath

So here is another bed spring wreath that I made in the last couple of days. It is put together in a different way. Given how these particular springs are made, I had to alternate the wide end with the narrow end and fortunately the process of wiring them worked that way. The middle picture is when I finished wiring the springs. I haven't totally decided yet about whether I like the little springs. I like that it looks more unstructured and crazy. It was easy to attach them and it wouldn't be hard to undo them if I get tired of this look and want a simpler look. I'm not sure if it will be outside or inside, but I might add something like a bit of greenery or a small bird's nest. I think the spring structure is strong enough to hold something that is lightweight. I have seen springs joined in this style by 2 or 3 others, but their springs were the same width at the top and bottom of each single spring. So my springs took me a little longer to work out. Also, the small springs are attached from both sides in alternate joints. So it could be hung from either side. I could also remove the small springs from one side and have a bit of styles.

Bedspring Wreath Evolved

Awhile back I posted about the bed spring wreath I was working on. At that time, I planned on welding the springs to stabilize them. I was waiting until I took my welding class to do this. Well I'm almost finished with the welding class which I have really, really enjoyed. But in the process of learning about welding, I knew that it wasn't the right solution. So I used thin wire to wrap the springs and it actually stabilized pretty well. I also had another interesting piece of metal round that I envisioned as a wreath frame. So I ended up wiring the bed springs in the center of the other round and it looked sort of suspended in the center of the round. Then I added some greenery and a ribbon and hung it outdoors.This allows me to dismantle the current wreath and reuse the parts in other ways which I know I will do.

We recently visited the Morro Bay area along the south central coast of CA. There is a beautiful place called Moonstone gardens. There is a wonderful succulents nursury there as well. This wonderful old metal bin unit was in the garden holding plants. I would LOVE to have one like it. I remember these from when I was little and would go with my dad to the hardware store.

Driftwood sailboat

I cannot take a bit of credit for originality here. I think the 1st driftwood sailboat I saw like this was on White Flower Farmhouse or maybe Lori's blog. Then I saw another one somewhere else. Mine was made very simply. No real craft. Finding the right piece of driftwood was the hardest. It will fit in next spring and summer with other sea shore decor, i.e. shells, sea glass, shells boxes, etc.

Today I began moving the more sensitive succulents into the greenhouse in case the weather decides to get serious about moving toward cooler weather. In cleaning things up, I decided to move these bird's nests into the house. I collected these 3 during this summer. None had been used. I just always am so impressed by the ability birds have to weave materials to build their beautiful nests.

Unique Halloween Wreath

This is a wreath I made a couple of years ago. I had collected a number of small Halloween pieces, but didn't like having little pieces all around, so I gathered my favorites together for this wreath. There are 3 witches, a big spider plus tiny spiders and the paper hinged cat was mine from my childhood. There are several other smaller pieces tucked in here and there as well including the pulled wood pumpkin a friend made for me.

Bird's nests under glass

I love this beautiful big glass dome. It unfortunately has a large crack as you can see in the middle picture. But I enjoy it in a protected place in the garden with 3 abandoned bird's nests I've collected. The reflections in the glass are beautiful. I had to move it just to take a picture because there was so much reflective glare in the camera. The chunky knob is what drew me to it in the 1st place. It does a great job of protecting the bird's nests.

a cozy retreat

I've had this old metal crib for quite a long time. I found it at a real antique estate sale. It was $20. It has had many different settings since it came to live with us. I have been looking for just the right cushions for it for some time and yesterday I found them at charming yard sale some very cute and artistic older women do nearby. The 2 large cushions are firm and there are the original springs under them so it feels very comfortable to cozy up on. Last year I found 2 large bolsters for $4. I cut one in half with a saw and use it on one of the ends. The other large bolster is in the grain sack along the back. It sits close to the creek, so there is often a nice breeze that comes from the creek. I was in our local Home Depot today and paused to look at their home magazines. I nearly fell over when I saw the familiar COUNTRY HOME on top of a magazine. It has Late Summer 2010 on it and appears to be a special edition. Oh-h-h-h be still my heart. I've had so much fun this afternoon in the "crib" reading every word in my new magazine.

In a recent post, I showed a part of this shelf from a distance. I added a piece - the little ironstone plate that I got Sunday at the Tattered House event. I love the neutrals - not to mention how much I love ironstone and, oh yes, metals. The old flowers are a metal. The tin piece on the right edge looks to be a homemade dust pan sitting upright.

I did have a good old time at the Tattered House's 3rd anniversary event yesterday. My friends Jacque and James - Old Soul Studios - were selling and as always I found many things they had that I loved. One of the things I got from them was this old clock face. It was a real clock and the clock works on the back are very interesting. All the sellers had wonderful things and I could have brought a truck load home, but I am trying to practice moderation - well sort of - some times.

I had such a fun day at yard sales. Actually most of the fun was at one sale. I wasn't expecting any garden finds per the ad - but there they were and they were SO CHEAP. I got the quarter round plant stand for $3. I couldn't believe it. The little table and the duck were each $2 Each of the 3 flat plant stands were $1. So everything together was $10. I've been so busy with life lately that I haven't been to many sales and those I went to were disappointing. So today was really fun. Everything is in the garden and in use except for one flat stand. Hope you had a fun Saturday too!

My husband likes this chair - not right now as it is all wet from the rain - but it is comfortable and roomy with a little springy action. I put these two pieces together. The base I found for $2 and I think the top was $4. The top is made for water to flow through so it doesn't trap rain - only leaves. It is funky, but we like funky. I got this little ironstone creamer this last weekend at the Gerber Rd. market that was a lot of fun.

And lastly, but certainly not least, we have one of James' original pieces (Old Soul Studios). I apologize for the shadow. It makes my sun look a bit like a large spider. The center is an old hubcap. It is hung on the outside of the cottage on our property where we can see it from near and far.

BIG RUST

If I had my way, I'd have probably dragged these home. This was in late Jan in Soquel, CA (I think). I'm not sure that was the name of the beach, but it was near that town. A woman I talked to on the beach said she had lived there and walked the beach regularly for 30 years and had never seen these before. The recent storms had sifted the beaches up and down the coast. These were uncovered in the process. So I don't know what they were, but the metal and rust were SO amazing and interesting. They are huge. I didn't have many pics to pick from since I have not gotten my pictures transfered yet. I have gone through my house a bunch of times and can't find my programs. When we had the fire scare last fall and had an exercise in packing up to leave,I remember seeing them. But what did I do with them when I put everything away ???

Weighty Scales

I was very happy when I found these scales in a junk yard several years ago. I have seen ones like it used in magazine layouts. I love the combination of white and rust. Additionally, I got it for a reasonable price, $20. I change things out of my house on a fairly regular basis. I've collected too much to have it all out at one time. So I store stuff and then 2 or 3 times a year I go 'shopping' in my storage area. But this scale seems to stay on display most of the time, although it does get moved and used in different way.

Love Those Wire Baskets

I got this wire basket at Alameda Antique Market several years ago. It is one of my favorite pieces. It serves a purpose as it holds some things I like and some I use in the kitchen. The small wheel hub rim hanging in front of the larger white iron piece came from the ranch site of my great grandparents. No one has lived there since them, so when I found it on the land, many years after they were gone and the ranch house had burned, I was thrilled to have a piece of their farm/ranch life. They were pioneers to CA in the 1860s as young newlyweds.

Metal, wire, rust, white ironstone, white enamelware - all things that I love. Most of these things were found at yard or estate sales or "junk" stores. All very reasonably priced or they wouldn't be in my house. The scales hangs at the edge of our kitchen and holds fruit or other dry produce. I also have wire baskets that hang from the ceiling which is what is in the upper right corner.

Fun Find

Some days you go out to do every day errands and come across a fun find. That happened to me today. I came across this pedestal. I love the heavy painted iron base. The little silver bowl had been sitting with a bunch of little things I find intriguing when put together. Lots of different textures. There is an old rusty frog (the flower kind), a little cement pot, flat rocks, a little bear my daughter gave me years ago, an old pipe, an old bottle, little springs, old scissors, beads and a metal star. I like how it works on the pedestal. What do you think???

Such Character

I took this picture at my friend, Jacque's (Old Soul Studios). I don't remember when I took it, but in going through pictures looking for something that inspired me to put on my blog - this was it. I just Love it. Perfect metal, rust, soft greenery combo!! And it reminds me of spring and gardening. It is raining again - so once again - I'm looking for other connections to spring inspirations. During the week we had sun and mild temps, it was wonderful to be outside working in the dirt for as many hours a day as possible. Yesterday I got a big stack of old garden magazines out and had a ball going through them and getting inspired for possible creations, projects, etc for spring.

New find

We visited Atelier De Campagne in Watsonville on our trip and this was one of my favorite finds. It's an old wash basin stand with great age. We have been hauling it with us in the RV which is where the pic was taken (please excuse the the towels and dog bone). Trinidad and his partner have such great stuff they bring back in containers from France and elsewhere.

Great rust for a spring project

I think I posted a pic of this crib before it was put together. I put the 4 sides together to study it for possible uses. I have the springs, but I am considering using it as a planter box and would leave the springs out in that case. We'd build a box that would set inside on the ground. I was thinking about planting a few vegies that climb and sprawl, i.e. a bean, squash, egg plant. The big thing now is to see if I can find a spot in our small area where we have sun that will handle the crib in a visually pleasing way. This crib is actually a youth bed size so it a bit wider and longer than a regular crib. I will have to move current plants out of the garden to make this change. There is plenty of time until planting time is here. More to come on this spring project.

white ironstone

I love white ironstone and I appreciate the browning and crazing. Most of the ironstone I have was found on sale or at flea markets or yard sales where it was quite reasonable. However, the little pitcher on the left was purchased at Sienna in Petaluma. Although it was a bit pricey for me, I just fell in love with it. The pearls are old jewelry. I dismantled the piles of old damaged pearl necklaces I've picked up at yard sales over the years and strung them on wire to be used as garlands.

Looking forward

This is a new project I am looking forward to incorporating into our yard. I seem to have this attraction to metal beds. I found this locally and kept looking at it and thinking - I don't need another bed. I have a metal crib that is probably 100 yrs. old and a metal head and foot metal bed frame and the old springs. (I believe both have been pictured on my blog previously.) This one looks like it is a youth bed size with side rails. It looks as if it could be from the 1930s maybe. Finally - with the price lowered to something I just couldn't pass up - I got it. It only made it into the yard and then the snow came, so there it sits. I want to use it in the yard with plants, but need to wait for the greenhouse to go up before I plan further. Also - I believe this extended freeze with temps in the teens will be taking a toll on my garden and there could be many changes this coming spring. Things are always changing in the garden. Which is really the fun part.

Fun Find

Some time back, I found this small drawer pull at Tattered House. There was a second one, but I only got this one. Wednesday we visited Maison Reve in Mill Valley for the 1st time and I found the pair of large pulls. I'm not really sure they are pulls as they are very large and heavy - about 9" across. The smaller one is about 5 " across. Someone welded a back with a hanger on each of them so they could function like a sconce. I really love them and they were very reasonable. It made my day for finds. The rest of the day was very special because I spent it with my sweet husband.

I took this pic nearly 30 years ago while visiting a relative on his ranch. This ranch had been in the family for years. Now - at this time when I appreciate junk so much - I think how fun it would be to be able to see what is in this old building and around it.

So here are some estate sale finds. I love this old chunky pulley and the cute old tin made a good planter. My greatest deal was 27 old faucet knobs for $10. I am always looking for these. I added them to my fence art. I think there are 44 now. My husband says the shape looks vaguely like the United States. OK - well it does take some imagination, but I see what he is talking about.

The 1st Tattered House Antique Street Market (Roseville, Ca) was really wonderful. Great selection of sellers. Sandy and Erika did a remarkable job. This photo is from Jacque's & James' space at the event. I spent lots of time there. Already looking forward to the 2nd Market.

Junk Excitment

I just read the Creative Gardener blog and Jacque and Jame's are selling at a location close to my home this Sat. I'm so excited and looking forward to finding some good junk. I have been going through my junk and thinking of moving some of it on to others. Some of it is still interesting to me, but I haven't found the right place for it yet and don't know if I will. I have been enjoying the good weather and being able to be outside and reacquaint myself with old friends in the garden. It is always fun and creative deciding each spring how I will use things in the gardens. Every year is different.

Well, here I go with my first blog. I have enjoyed viewing other blogs with similar interests and find them inspiring. I wanted to have a place to share some of the photos I have taken and share things I find fun, beautiful or inspiring. Hopefully, practice will improve my skills at blogging.
